There was a certain man who cut down a tree. He took some of the wood
and built a fire to heat his home. He took more of the wood and built a fire in
his stove, and cooked a meal. With the left-over wood, he carved an image
and worshipped it.
Isaiah the prophet wroet about this practice long ago, trying to show just how
absurd it was. In Isaiah 44:19, we can read, "And no one considers in his heart,
Nor is there knowledge nor understanding to say,
“ I have burned half of it in the fire,
Yes, I have also baked bread on its coals;
I have roasted meat and eaten it;
And shall I make the rest of it an abomination?
Shall I fall down before a block of wood?”
Isaiah's conclusion was, the people who practice this type of thing -
"They do not know nor understand;
For He has shut their eyes, so that they cannot see,
And their hearts, so that they cannot understand." - Isaiah 44:18
Now, we today look at this as strange and even foolish practices. But, there
are so many, living in this day and age, who still practice idolatry. By definition,
an idol is ANYTHING that comes between a person and God. So, continuing on
in this thought pattern, an idol could be a carved image made of wood or stone,
or it could be possessions, or entertainment, or work, or our friendships and
relationships - or ANYTHING ELSE that we allow to take that first place spot.
This pulls us away from God and His will for our lives.
"You shall have NO OTHER gods before Me," - Exodus 20:3
Blessed be the name of our heavenly Father, the Almighty God!
Have a great day!
