This morning so far, while flipping through the channels, I have learned quite
a bit. I have learned about the career perils of actors. I have learned about
the girlfriend of a prince. I have learned of the medical background of prisoners
around the country. The break-ups of musicians marriages, and fast food chain
shake-ups.
Oh, I have also been told that I could have the secrets sent to me, that will make
me rich beyond my wildest dream. Why I'm not sleeping as well on my own
mattress, and how a new supplement can change my life and make me so much
more health. And yes, I have learned of a new plan to help me lose weight and
firm up.
What does all of this have to do with a Bible Jump Start? Absolutely nothing.
The things that we fill our time with really are a reflection of who we are. My
brothers are some of my greatest teachers, and both have given me so much
wisdom, but my oldest made a statement that has stuck with me that applies so
well to this topic. He gave a good name to what is plaguing most of us. He calls
it 'mind pollution'.
See, I don't need to know about Tom Cruise, or Prince William. Jesus the Christ
said, "Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in
heart, and you will find rest for your souls." (Matthew 11:29). Romans 15:4 tells us,
"For whatever things were written before were written for our learning, that we
through the patience and comfort of the Scriptures might have hope."
I don't need to spend my time with the "get rich" infomercials when I read in
Proverbs 15:6 "In the house of the righteous there is much treasure,
But in the revenue of the wicked is trouble."
Jesus said in Matthew 6:21, "For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also."
That could also be for where we spend our time. We treasure the relaxation that comes
with turning off the brain, and 'veging-out' in front of the tube. But there is better
peace to be found from God's word. Psalm 119:162 - "I rejoice at Your word As one
who finds great treasure."
And lastly, I did not forget the "slim down and tone up", or health peddlers either.
1 Timothy 4:6-8 -
6 If you instruct the brethren in these things, you will be a good minister of Jesus Christ,
nourished in the words of faith and of the good doctrine which you have carefully followed.
7 But reject profane and old wives’ fables, and exercise yourself toward godliness.
8 For bodily exercise profits a little, but godliness is profitable for all things, having
promise of the life that now is and of that which is to come.
All of this has to do with our handling of ourselves. It has to do with our handling of our
time, and most importantly, our handling of God's word!
Have a great day!
