Accommodation leads to accommodation, which leads to accommodation. A
gradual giving in, a little bit of surrender leads to more of the same. Psychologist
who study perception have a term for that. They call it "habituation". It is like what
happens when we get something new. At first, that is all we recognize. Then gradually,
we get used to it and hardly even notice it anymore, like wearing a new watch, for
instance.
Revelation 2:4 has given us the danger of "spiritual habituation". It says, "...you have left
your first love." Our first love should be for the One who loves us (John 3:16). Gradually,
we "habituate". We notice Him only when we need to "tell" Him something in our prayer or
when we need to ask a particular favor from Him. He is always there 24/7. We need to
include Him in our everyday happenings.
God doesn't want us to make accommodations. He doesn't want to see us surrender to the
things of this world and He certainly doesn't want us to put Him on the shelf until we have
time for Him. Hebrews 4:12-13 reminds us that His Word is quick and powerful, sharper
than a two-edged sword and that all things are exposed for Him to see. Grab the time to
develop that personal relationship with Him, after all, He is your Father.
