There is an interesting story about the poet, Lord Byron. While studying at
Cambridge, he was offended by a rule that students were not allowed to
keep dogs at the university. In response to this rule, he decided that he
would keep... a bear. His argument was that the rule made no mention of
the bear and, as the story goes, the authorities had no legal basis to
complain.
We get like this sometimes. We make justifications for our actions, without
taking into account the "common sense" factor. This story, from the life of
Byron, brings a chuckle from most of us. But we are to obey the laws of the
land, as long as they do not compromise God's laws. (1 Peter 2:13-17)
We should give ourselves to KNOWING the laws of God and man. We
cannot be, as in today's legal system, looking for loopholes in the laws.
We need to understand not only the law itself, but the spirit of the law.
Psalm 119:33-35
33 Teach me, O LORD, the way of Your statutes,
And I shall keep it to the end.
34 Give me understanding, and I shall keep Your law;
Indeed, I shall observe it with my whole heart.
35 Make me walk in the path of Your commandments,
For I delight in it.
Knowing the law, and understanding the law are two separate things.
(James 4:17) We need to understand and keep God's law until the very
end!
Delight in the law, and have a great day!
